Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which extends from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. It is commonly caused by a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or nerve compression. Treatment for sciatica focuses on relieving pain, reducing inflammation, and addressing the underlying cause.

In most cases, conservative treatments are effective. These include rest, physical therapy, and medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants. Physical therapy plays a crucial role by strengthening the muscles supporting the spine, improving flexibility, and promoting proper posture. Applying heat or ice packs can also help reduce discomfort.

For patients with more severe or persistent symptoms, advanced treatments may be recommended. These can include epidural steroid injections to reduce inflammation around the nerve, or minimally invasive procedures. In rare cases where conservative methods fail, surgical options such as discectomy or laminectomy may be considered to relieve pressure on the nerve.
